Located 25km’s South of Lithgow, Hampton is best known for its wind farm. The large proportion of Australia’s electricity that is generated that is generated from coal-fired power stations, contributes to the country’s high per capita rate of greenhouse emissions.
For the first time in Australia, a small privately owned company has taken up the challenge to develop, own and generate a renewable energy generator. At full capacity the turbines in Hampton’s wind farm generate 1320kW of electricity, which is fed directly into the local grid. The project provides an example to the farming community of an alternative, and sustainable, means of diversifying the on farm income stream.
Its prime location, near the Jenolan Caves road, also acts as a tourist attraction in the local area.
