| Tens of millions
of years ago the Blue Mountains lay beneath the ocean.
Then, like the Great Barrier Reef of today, tiny creatures
called Coral Polyps, built marine cities of coral. Thousands
of years later, massive earth movements lifted these
reefs high into the air to form the Blue Mountains and
further movements compressed and heated the coral into
limestone.
As rains seeped through
cracks in the earth, they dissolved the limestone and
underground streams and rivers gouged
out great caverns in the rock. As the rains eased, the
streams finally slowed to mere drips and the limestone
solution began to crystallise into strange, beautiful
milk-white formations. Where iron was mixed in the formations
they grew in pinks, oranges and browns … thus was
created - The Jenolan Caves.
